History of student exchange between ‘Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Marii Konopnickiej in Legionowo’ and ‘Spessart-Gymnasium in Alzenau’

The student exchange between Spessart-Gymnasium in Alzenau and Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Marii Konopnickiej in Legionowo exists ever since 1995. It was then, when schools were directed by principals Gebhard Hepp and Bożena Bańkowska. They both knew that it is the student exchange that will be the perfect way for their pupils to perfect their fluency in using foreign languages, but also an ideal oppurtunity to let them acknowdlage other nations, their history, manners, mentality, and making international friendships. The idea behind this project is to show foreigners how looks the ordinary day of local family. That is why students live in house's of families whos child is absent due to the fact of him being absent abroad, that way they grasp their everyday life, habbits, as well as school life of their foreign equals. During these twelve days of accomodation teenagers explore the culture and manners of the participating Countries.

In the current year, the twelfth student exchange took place. Each time there are two year of separation between every event of this exchange. There was however no student exchange in school term 2004/2005 and 2008/2009.

During most of the exchanges, special workskops were run concerning diffrent matters. The biggest project ever was preparing theater play based on W. Shapespeare's drama "Romeo and Juliet" - which was finalized by eight performances (4 in Alezenau and 4 in Legionowo). Other project that were realized during exchanges are: "Legends - Waternymph as a symbol in Polish and German literature", "Tradition enchanted within the fables - comparsion", "Comparing the industrial districts of Poland and Germany on the example of upper Silesia and Ruhr", "Comparsion of celebrating christmas", "History of riots in Warsaw in years 1943-1944", "Exact introduction to the methods and structure of hhe European Parliament", "Genesis of the cration of the East Prussia"

In year 1999 contact has been made with Finnish school in Rühimäki. Both schools have together realized projects "Manners and traditions in Finland and Poland", which took place two years ago. Romeo and Juliet

28th September 2007 was a special day in Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Marii Konopnickiej in Legionowo. William Shakespeare could not have foreseen this. His tragedy “Romeo and Juliet” was performed in our school. The project was prepared by Ursula Jebe (she prepared the adaptation of the play and directed it), German teachers Johannes Lorentzen, Wiesława Szaryńska and Ranata Dzida-Gardias Polish teachers.

Nicola Sendelbach - a German student appeared as JULIET

Mateusz Pryciak - a Polish student took part of ROMEO

The others were: Marlies Bahlke, Ada Brzostowicz, Annika Barthelmeh, Clara Blasius, Rafał Szymkiewicz, Jens Bott, Katharina Stemmer, Max Wagner, Katharina Rost, Piotr Bałdowski, Marta Kowalska, Marta Grądzka, Iza Specjalska, Agnieszka Ziółkowska, Thomas Haase,Franziska Fecher,Timm Heag, Alina Paul, Larissa Trager, Mona Heck, Celina Emsermann, Marta Kiślaczuk, Paulina Nec, Katarzyna Sierańska, Kamila Koch, Magdalena Laskowska, Marta Komarnicka, Dorota Antosik, Andrea Dedio, Barbara Kempf, Monika Motyl ,Alexander Munz, Agnieszka Olszewska, Katarzyna Wiereszka, Katharina Rohrs, Katarzyna Suska, Ewa Tomaszewska and Pamela Grobelny.

Most actors worked in the project for almost two years and this play was performed in Alzenau and later in Legionowo.

The idea to perform it in two languages was very interesting.

In Alzenau, a German choir interpreted the Polish text for the German audience. Here, the Polish choir interpreted the German dialogues.

The drama was performed four times in Legionowo: twice for the students, once for the citizens of Legionowo and once for special guests: the President of Alzenau, the President of Legionowo, the local authorities, some parents, many teachers and others.

Thanks to some local enthusiasts the performance was showed live in the Internet.

It was a very good experience for the teachers and students to prepare the project and the adaptation was meant to expose the good relationships among EU nations.
